What are essential oils?
They are subtle, therapeutic-grade oils distilled from plants, shrubs, flowers, trees, roots, bushes and seeds. They are oxygenating and help transport nutrients to the cells of our body. Without oxygen, nutrients cannot be assimilated; therefore, the oxygenating essential oils can help us maintain our health.

How Does Aromatherapy Work?
The essential plant distillates (essential oils) interrelate with the human body within four distinct modes of action, pharmacological (as phytopharmaceuticals), physiological (physically and chemically), psychological (affecting mental states and processes) and incorporeal (spiritual).
Our body uses the aromatic molecules (essential oils)
- Through our olfactory system which is connected to the limbic system in the brain where our most primal feelings, urges and emotions reside
- By inhalation and skin absorption of the low weight molecular structure of essential oils.
- Aromatherapy works best within a holistic approach to wellness.
Is Aromatherapy New?
The Bible tells of how treasures from the East, Frankincense and Myrrh, were gifts from the Wise Men to the Christ child at the time of his birth.
The Chinese have ancient herbal traditions that can be found recorded 2000 years before Christ. Hippocrates of Greece, known as the "father of medicine", prescribed perfume fumigation's and fomentation's. But perhaps the most famous and richest associations and information concerning the first aromatic associations, dates back in Egyptian papyrus manuscripts written 2800 years BC. The information encompasses 6000 years of aromatic history. These manuscripts speak of "fine oils and choice perfumes, and the incense of temples, whereby every God is gladdened.
We know from the study of ancient manuscripts that priests in India some 4,000 years ago practiced aromatherapy very much like it is practiced today. Modern Ayurvedic medicine includes an aromatic component that has evolved from this ancient practice. Scent was very important to ancient Egyptians who used plant-oil infusions, gums and resins, as well as aromatic herbs and flowers in rituals, relaxation and skin care extensively in their culture.
Modern aromatherapy, as we know it today, was revived in 1910 by the French chemist, Gattefosse, after having been badly burned in a laboratory explosion and plunging his arm into a nearby vat of lavender essential oil.
The amazing speed of recovery and lack of scarring led him into a lifetime study of essential oils and their medicinal uses for skincare.
How can I use Aromatherapy myself?
Most essential oils have been approved as G.R.A.S. (Generally Regarded As Safe - when used by various trades at their normal levels of use).
However, these standards were developed by the food and perfume industries and were not developed specifically for the use of essential oils in aromatherapy.
Aromatherapy, as a medical healing modality, has been in existence in Europe for quite some time, and the United States is fast developing a similar model, however there is at present no FDA approval for the use of essential oils medicinally.
Anyone can use essential oils themselves (self medication) provided they are thoroughly familiar with the uses, safety precautions and contraindications and have available thorough and accurately referenced information on the potential hazards associated with using essential oils.
Why is quality so important?
All the amazing stories about the effectiveness of essential oils for improving almost every aspect of life presume that the oils being used are pure and, where standards have been established, of 100% pure therapeutic grade.
This is an extremely important point for two reasons:
1. Pure essential oils known to be safe for human use may be used on the skin, in the air, or internally.
2. Impure or adulterated oils, whose contents or quality are unknown, can cause mild or extremely serious problems when used on the skin, or are inhaled or ingested, and may even be carcinogenic with repeated use. They should never be used undiluted or repeatedly, on or in the body.
This is why it is important that you know what's in the bottle when you buy an essential oil. The label is not enough. There is no official regulation of essential oil quality in the U.S. Therefore, buyer beware: Be sure you purchase your essential oils from a company that can document that every drop it sells has been tested using credible, independent laboratories.
