This week my daughter will celebrate her 7th birthday, which is a miracle for all who know her. What is also amazing is the way she fits into school and life in general. To look at her no one would know anything was wrong, but my daughter is so different from any child her age.

At 10 months she fell into a coma and was fitting. After finally getting to some medical help we were told that she seemed to have a metabolic disorder and most disorders could not be diagnosed. We were flown to Sydney where we were introduced to some of the most wonderful people who were fascinated with my daughter's problems. After much contact with overseas doctors they diagnosed her as having a rare disorder where there were only 5 surviving cases in the world. The picture they painted was not a bright one but she had pulled through remarkably unscathed so we were hopeful. After too many blood tests, many weeks in hospital and much distress to her, we were finally allowed home with strict instructions on her diet and what to do when another crisis arose. The most positive aspect was that she was not put on any medication. She has a lot of diet supplements, which have been relatively successful. She is still fed 4 hours day and night - something I'm still not used to.

Unfortunately, it has been difficult for my daughter to come to terms with all the hospitalization she has endured. For the first 3 years we went to Sydney every 3 months but thankfully it is every six now. She has been hospitalized for any illness she has had in the past and put on a high glucose intravenous drip to maintain her. We were told, as an example, that a normal persons body works at a walking pace but my daughters however works at a very fast running pace and therefore cannot cope with any problem - whether it be a cold or a temperature or anything. She also had a lot of trouble telling us when she was feeling sick and it was often too late by the time we realized something was wrong. The doctors thought because of the way her body functions she could not tell whether she felt sick or not because she possibly felt unwell all the time but thankfully now she is much older and stronger, things have definitely got a lot easier.

Living with her has been like living with a yo-yo. She hits extreme highs and then plummets into a black mood for no apparent reason. All we know is that the state of her health affects her mood as is with any normal person. Her diet is very high in sugar and I'm sure this hasn't helped her mood swings. She even went through a self-mutilation stage for a while but thankfully grew out of it.

One doctor tried to tell us she was an ADD child but we dismissed that promptly! I really think it is difficult for a person without an ongoing illness to understand what it is like to feel really unwell all the time. Her disorder is known to affect her brain when she gets very ill but that is different from a day to day sickness.

Each day has been difficult for her and she has had to learn to cope with her mood swings - not an easy task for a child. School has helped with this, as she knows that her friends would not put up with aggressive behavior. She is very popular at school and everyone looks after her so well we couldn't ask for her to be with better people. This year has possibly been one of the most difficult for her. For some unknown reason she has had a lot of trouble with her health - yet there has been nothing wrong with her. She tends to get very black around her eyes and then she gets tired and becomes quite difficult and it is something she doesn't understand because she doesn't seem to know it is happening.

She tries very hard at school and is quite bright but this year she was getting into trouble all the time which was very distressing for her because she idolizes her teacher but couldn't seem to control herself. I tried increasing her sugar to make up for all the energy she was exerting yet that seemed to exasperate the problem even more. Her self-esteem was suffering and her schoolwork was suffering and we didn't know what to do. It definitely was not a case of a child going through a bad behavior time and there was more to this problem but we didn't know what it was.

When we learned of the BEFE Hydro-Therapy System we thought that it would be worth trying because we were desperate for help away from the medical side. The only help the doctors offered was to hospitalize her again and do more blood tests - something that didn't sound particularly positive. So after much discussion (and learning) we borrowed a System. The results have been PHENOMENAL. I have documented the change after her first 5 baths.

1… She was over energetic before her bath. After her bath she became very weak, sluggish and extremely dopey and very dark around her eyes, which kept getting darker for about 15 minutes after her bath. Whilst in the bath she complained of a tickling sensation around her navel and in her tummy. She was very cheerful and responsive the next day.

2… She was very dopey after her second bath but not as near as weak as her first. Her eyes went dark again but approx. 1 hour after her bath she started to come to life. She was very keen to be helpful and very switched on to her homework. She has been very uncooperative and non-thinking when doing it before.

3… Her eyes didn't darken this time and she said she felt really great. We didn't have much hot water and she said she really enjoyed her bath. (That possibly was the best indicator of all!)
4… Her eyes darkened a little but cleared up very quickly and she was very energetic and happy. She actually got out of bed very happy and bright the next morning and has had lots more energy throughout the day. School has been different also. She achieved more yesterday than she has all year.
5… Her energy level after her bath was very low. She had to go straight to bed after her bath. Her eyes went very black again.

My daughter has improved so much after having her baths it is difficult to believe things were so up and down before.

Her baths still seem to mark her lethargic and her eyes still go quite dark but it's like living with a normal healthy child. She is achieving well at school and is so happy within herself. She is bright and energetic and her outlook looks very positive. We are looking forward to enjoying life with her now and believe it or not I have had to reduce her sugar intake because she is driving us crazy with all her energy. I am also looking forward to when she is old enough to get up in the middle of the night and feed herself.
